Stokes Hill Wharf, the scene of such devastation and heartbreak
during the dark years of WW2, is a favoured evening gathering spot for Darwin locals
of all ages. Most shops trade afternoon and evening until about 9:30 during the Dry,
but mainly evenings during the Wet unless there is a special activity scheduled. A
selection of restaurants, from take away right through to air conditioned a la carte,
caters for all tastes. Whether it's the ever popular fish and chips or a tasty laksa,
all washed down with an ice cold drink, you'll be hard pressed to find better value
for money anywhere! Don't think it's all about food; the Wharf Precinct includes such attractions as Indo Pacific Marine - a fascinating living coral reef, The Australian Pearling Exhibition - a magnificent museum to our past, and present, multi million dollar pearling industry, and the intriguing Oil Storage Tunnels. These tunnels will give you an insight into the frantic preparations for the onslaught of WW2 on a perilously unprepared country. The wharf is an easy and interesting walk from the central business district and there are several alternate routes with different things to see, so there's no need to back track. Print a copy of the Walk Map on our Location Page to help you find your way. | ![]() |
