January 2006

New Year’s Eve saw a floating visitor that dwarfed even a project of this size; the 105,000 tonne Diamond Princess with 2600 passengers plus one crew member for every two passengers. Keep working boys; no rest for the wicked!






January 2 and it’s all systems go. Plenty of fill needed to bring the Convention Centre pad to level and trimmed up for Sitzler/Barclay Mowlem JV to kick off building works. As those long reach operators polish their skills, the precast wave wall sections wait patiently to take their places waterside.

With the wet season settling in, BMD arrived on site to begin the vital task of installing groundwater subsoil drainage. Water was "the" word for January with 400 mm of rainfall and king tides of almost 8 metres. Earthworks slowed and the major advance for the month was the installation of wave wall units and rock armour.





The month ended on a very sad note with the tragic death of a young electrician working alone on one of the floating pontoons associated with the project.    RIP
