July 2006
SitzlerBM are well into Darwin's new Convention Centre; and with more than
half the ground floor support columns poured, the ground floor formwork is
rapidly taking shape. In the centre background are two RAN vessels, taking
on supplies for return to East Timor, as part of Australia's involvement in
the restoration of law and order in the world's newest nation.
High tides in mid July made earthworks, and the placing of rock armour,
a slow process. The low area in the seawall, highlighted in the thumbnail
left, was left for installation of the pipework for maintaining water quality
and levels in the future swimming lagoon. As you can see, there's not much
freeboard at the top of the tide; especially with a strong breeze and a bit
of chop!

Time and tide waits for no man, and neither does SitzlerBM; the erection of
support columns continues apace at the seawall end of the basement whilst
forming of the ground floor slab pushes on at the other end of the
Convention Centre.
With the higher tides safely past, Macmahon were able to start excavating
into the lagoon side of the seawall and begin installing pipework for the
swimming lagoon. The pipe is HDPE (poly) so it's not as heavy as it looks,
but there'll be plenty of fun and games before this little bit of pipework
is done; I reckon!!
