December 2006
Structural steel erection is now well underway on the Convention Centre.
The expanded image left shows support columns for the new oyster shell
shaped roof plus the large steel beams to carry the first floor. This
suspended concrete slab will become the 1500 seat plenary hall. Site
signage has also been changed to Sitzler Laing O'Rourke, reflecting
the sale of Barclay Mowlem to Laing O'Rourke earlier in the year.
With Christmas rapidly approaching, Macmahon's concrete gang is really
pushing the wave wall; as you can see, they've reached the Stokes Hill
access road. Work has also begun on the Fort Hill end, and wave wall
construction will pass the 75% mark by the time everyone knocks off
for the holidays.

To the dismay of taxpayers outside Darwin, the much publicised wave pool
is now under construction. This image left gives an idea of the shape, with
Frankipile installing support piles now that the design has been finalised.
When complete it will be Australia's largest wave pool, covering some 3,000m2
and producing waves up to 1.2m high.
A break in the welcome rain between Christmas and New Year's Eve saw
SLO'R JV getting ready for the first concrete pour on the first floor! The plant rooms,
left foreground, have been roofed and the steel fixers can be seen, centre,
finishing off the mesh. Right centre you can see the Bondek laid out ready for
the steel fixers.
Happy New Year everybody :-)
