November 2006
Well, it's been all year coming but, with November kicking in, the
earthworks will soon close off Kitchener Bay forever! As you can see
from the enlarged image left, only the tiniest gap remains, where the
current's running through, before the mammoth earthen core of the
project's seawall is completed.
That's it, click and clap, it's all done.... well, except for thousands
of cubic metres of rock armour!! Ten months and 300,000m3 plus of select
fill and it's done; seems like only January when work started.... hang on,
it was.

The image left, when enlarged, shows the Stokes Hill Wharf gatehouse
that for years greeted thousands of visitors on their arrival in Darwin.
Many's the truckie or train driver that cursed the guards as they waited
their turn to enter the wharf and load or unload, and don't even hazard
a guess at the tonnes of beer that passed by here to quench that famous
Territory thirst!
A bare sight indeed with the old gatehouse gone to make way for pipeworks
and a reconstructed access road. It hasn't gone all that far, so who knows
if it might reappear yet again, to evoke fond memories of those
millions upon millions of stubbies that passed by her doors! Click here
to see how things looked only nine months ago, in February.
